Millennials struggle to achieve work-life balance

“Work-life balance” has increasingly become a top priority for employees, and Millennials in particular, when it comes to job satisfaction and deciding where to work. Unfortunately, it is often difficult to strike that perfect balance. According to one recent study from Ernst & Young, 26 percent of US Millennials were having a harder time with work-life balance than they were five years ago, and almost half of employees surveyed said they didn’t have enough time for personal activities. But employers have the power to change that if they truly want to recruit and retain today’s top talent.

Improving work-life balance

While part of the problem can be rectified by employer-driven benefits like more paid time off and flexible schedules,
there are several other ways employees can improve their work-life balance that are driven largely by where they work.

Shorten your commute

Research has shown that the longer a person’s commute, the more profound the effects on personal well-being and life satisfaction. Considering that Boston has the sixth most time-consuming commute in the country, employees in this region are already at a disadvantage, so this one is critical. Access to public transportation, ideally the T, can make all the difference here.

Make time for exercise
According to a study published in the Harvard Business Review, there is a clear relationship between exercise and one’s ability to manage the intersection between work and home. Exercise reduces stress, and lower stress makes the time spent in either realm more productive and enjoyable.

Build downtime into your schedule
Even a 5-10 minute walk in the middle of every day can have a significant impact on your perceived work-life balance. A little relaxation can go a long way, and being able to take these short breaks are paramount for helping you achieving the balance you desire. Getting outside is ideal, and having access to things like clear pathways, open space, and beautiful water views can make those breaks all the more rewarding.

Benefits

Employees aren’t the only ones that benefit from an improved work-life balance. Companies benefit dramatically as well, as better balance enhances employee productivity. In fact, the Corporate Executive Board, which represents 80% of Fortune 500 companies, found that employees who believe they have a good work-life balance work 21% harder than those who don’t after researching 50,000 global workers.
